Haunting Shadows: Yōtei's October Launch Amidst GTA 6 Hype

We have a breakthrough: Sony has boldly set a fall release date for a significant video game in 2025, undeterred by the looming shadow of Grand Theft Auto 6. The highly anticipated sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, from Sucker Punch, will launch on PlayStation 5 on October 2.

This marks a cautious venture into the fall release period by an industry that has typically hesitated in the face of Rockstar’s juggernaut. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has confirmed that GTA 6 is set for a fall launch, leading many publishers to consider postponing their titles to avoid competition.

According to an industry executive who spoke to The Game Business, the fear of launching near GTA 6 is palpable: “A late October or early November release for GTA 6 is daunting for us. We want to avoid launching right before or right after it. If GTA 6 comes in late October, it forces us to either launch early—something many are doing amid the recent influx of summer releases—or go later and risk competing with Black Friday sales.”

Before the reveal of Ghost of Yōtei‘s launch date, Borderlands 4 and Marathon were the major titles scheduled for September 23, 2025. It appears that Sony believes October 2 is a safe enough window.

In addition, Sony released a new story trailer for the game, showcasing a blend of cinematic sequences and gameplay. The trailer follows the main character, Atsu, on her vengeful mission to track down six individuals responsible for her family’s demise.

Pre-orders for Ghost of Yōtei will open at 10 a.m. EDT on May 2, featuring a comprehensive Collector’s Edition that includes replicas of Atsu’s Ghost mask, sash, and the Tsuba from her katana. However, Sony has yet to announce the price for this special edition. The standard edition of the game will retail for $69.99, and a digital deluxe edition will be available for $79.99.
