Unlocking New Dimensions: Switch 2 and Virtual Game Cards Revolutionize Gaming!

Nintendo has released a significant system update for the Switch, introducing a new ownership system for digital games called Virtual Game Cards, along with several features related to the upcoming Switch 2, including the GameShare function. With Virtual Game Cards, users can easily transfer digital games across multiple Switch consoles and share them with family members.

The latest system version, 20.0.0, represents one of the most significant updates to the Switch firmware in recent times. This update not only adds Virtual Game Cards and GameShare to the main menu but also facilitates system transfers to the Nintendo Switch 2, either through local console connections or via cloud backup.

In a surprising change, the icons for News and the Nintendo eShop have been updated, now appearing in green and red, respectively. Upon entering the eShop, users will notice a new red branding that distinctly identifies it with the Switch 2, replacing the previous orange theme.

While the key features are undoubtedly GameShare and Virtual Game Cards, GameShare is not yet fully operational. This feature permits some multiplayer games—beginning with Clubhouse Game: 51 Worldwide Classics—to be shared locally between different consoles using a single copy of the game, reminiscent of the Nintendo DS’ Download Play system. However, this is available only if a Switch 2 user is sharing. Furthermore, Switch 2 users will have the ability to utilize GameShare online for select games through the new GameChat feature.

For now, Virtual Game Cards stand out as the most exciting innovation. When you select Virtual Game Cards from the menu, you’ll see a user-friendly display of all your digitally owned games and DLC, represented as small cards. From this menu, you can easily load or eject games from the current console, transfer them to another, or lend them (for a period of 14 days) to a member of your Nintendo Account Family group.

For those with a single Switch, the Virtual Game Card menu simply offers a more organized way to manage your digital collection. In contrast, for families or individuals with multiple Switch consoles, this update greatly enhances the flexibility of sharing and enjoying digital games.

I experimented with lending games to a family member and retrieving them, and as long as the consoles are in proximity, the process works seamlessly. There’s even a satisfying animation that shows the Virtual Game Card ejecting from one system and transferring to the other. However, it’s worth noting that loading a card differs from downloading it to the console; a card can be downloaded but not loaded or vice versa.

While there are some intricate restrictions, Virtual Game Cards represent a monumental update for many Switch users. The fact that this latest system update also prepares your Switch for the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 adds an extra layer of excitement.
