Google has introduced a new AI-driven initiative designed to assist individuals in learning new languages, targeting the space currently occupied by Duolingo.
This week, Google Labs unveiled a suite of tools known as Little Language Experiments, powered by their Gemini AI model. The aim is to make language learning quicker, more intuitive, and far less formal.
The collection features three concise tools:
- Tiny Lesson: Focuses on practical phrases for everyday situations, such as requesting assistance at an airport or managing a lost passport
- Slang Hang: Creates realistic dialogues among native speakers, complete with hoverable slang and cultural insights
- Word Cam: Utilizes your phone’s camera to identify objects and translate them into the target language

All these tools are powered by Gemini, Google’s multimodal large language model capable of handling text, images, and more. This same technology is behind other Google AI features across platforms like Search, Workspace, and Android.
What’s New
Learning a new language extends beyond just memorizing words; it’s about speaking like a natural human. This is exactly what Google is addressing.
Many language platforms (including Duolingo) often result in learners speaking in overly formal or unnatural ways. With tools such as Slang Hang, Google aims to bridge the divide between traditional textbook learning and fluency in real-world situations.
In Google’s own words: “These experiments are not intended to replace conventional study methods, but rather to complement them by helping individuals build habits, stay engaged, and incorporate learning into their daily lives.”
Meanwhile, Duolingo is fully embracing AI:
- Recently announced 148 new AI-generated courses, nearly doubling its course library
- Transitioning from human contractors to AI where feasible
- Employing generative AI for recruitment and performance evaluations
Since launching its Max subscription tier in 2023, Duolingo has increasingly relied on AI. They’re now scaling this even further, but not all users are pleased.
The Big Question
