President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy on social media by sharing an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope.
Originally posted on Truth Social, the image showcases Trump in traditional papal attire, including a white cassock, mitre, and a prominent crucifix. It has since been circulated through official White House accounts.

As expected, the post has elicited a range of reactions, including amusement, indignation, and bewilderment. One commenter on X expressed, “Please take this down. Many Catholics, myself included, find this a significant disrespect to the past and future leader of our church.”
Others, however, are unable to resist chuckling at the ridiculousness of the situation. Regardless of opinions, it’s clear that the image has sparked conversation.
Pope Francis recently passed away, and Trump previously faced criticism for stating, “I’d like to be Pope,” while also suggesting a “very good” cardinal from New York as a potential successor.
Trump’s polarizing personality is well-known, drawing attention for past incidents, including his phone antics and gum chewing at the Pope’s funeral.
The White House has yet to address the purpose behind the AI-generated image.
Though raised as a Presbyterian, Trump now identifies as a non-denominational Christian, and his connection with the Christian faith community is complicated due to various behaviors, beliefs, and allegations.
While he has enjoyed considerable backing from conservative evangelical voters, his understanding of Christian doctrine has frequently come under scrutiny.
This isn’t the first encounter between AI and religion; last year in Germany, an AI-powered avatar delivered a sermon at St. Paul’s church, discussing topics like overcoming fear and faith in Jesus, all while maintaining an eerily static expression.
In 2023, an AI-generated image featuring Pope Francis in a fashionable Balenciaga puffer jacket also garnered attention on social media, showcasing the increasingly realistic nature of AI deep fakes.
For now, though, the focus shifts to the anticipated papal conclave and the future trajectory of the Catholic Church in the wake of Francis’ leadership.
As the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics await the signal from the Sistine Chapel, Trump’s digital escapade is unlikely to enhance his image among many.
