PlayStation Unveils New Studio Born from...

PlayStation Studios is expanding with the introduction of TeamLFG, a development team that originated from Bungie, the creators of Destiny 2 and Marathon. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO, Hermen Hulst, announced this exciting news on Wednesday. He indicated that TeamLFG was initially conceived as an incubation project at Bungie and has now emerged as a fully operational studio ready to make its mark.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, TeamLFG expressed its commitment to crafting games that foster friendship, community, and a sense of belonging. The team hopes players will feel a thrill when they log on, finding familiar companions online, sharing laughs over unforgettable moments, and creating myths and memes out of their experiences together. Their mission revolves around cultivating memorable gameplay that leaves a lasting impact on players.

TeamLFG is set to launch its debut project, described as a “team-based action game influenced by fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life simulations, and frog-themed games.” While still untitled, this project promises a whimsical, comedic setting within a unique science-fantasy universe. Details regarding platforms and release dates have yet to be revealed.

In the summer of 2023, Bungie initially hinted at TeamLFG’s development, ramping up recruitment for this project and emphasizing the need for team members with varying backgrounds. At that time, Bungie noted that the incubation team was focused on creating a game that emphasized depth, mastery, and a welcoming community while ensuring it maintained Bungie’s renowned action gameplay style.

TeamLFG’s aim to develop “immersive multiplayer worlds driven by action games that players can engage with for hours” aligns with Bungie’s objectives seen in Destiny 2 and the revamped Marathon. However, the new studio’s upcoming live-service project appears to cater to a different audience with a distinctly different tone.

In 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Bungie in a significant $3.6 billion deal. While Bungie was expected to maintain its multiplatform nature and independence from SIE, subsequent years saw delays in projects and the laying off of hundreds of employees. By 2024, Bungie announced plans to “deepen its integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment,” which included transferring 155 employees to SIE and ultimately leading to the formation of TeamLFG.

Meanwhile, Bungie continues to work on Destiny 2, having recently revealed two new expansions, and is also developing the extraction shooter, Marathon, slated for release in September.
