The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be helmed by Andy Serkis, who is celebrated for his portrayal of Gollum through voice and performance capture in Peter Jackson’s adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Since the release of those films, Serkis has directed several notable projects, including Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Jackson will co-produce this new film alongside writing and producing collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, both of whom contributed to the original LOTR and Hobbit trilogies.
Last year, Boyens described The Hunt for Gollum as a self-contained film, clarifying that it won’t be a multi-part release. She characterized it as a “rather intense story” that occurs after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the events at the Mines of Moria, as seen in the original The Fellowship of the Ring.
It remains uncertain who else will join Serkis in the cast of The Hunt for Gollum, especially considering that much of the primary cast from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring has aged approximately 26 years since its release. Additionally, key characters from Fellowship—with the possible exception of Aragorn—would likely be preoccupied during the time period that The Hunt for Gollum takes place. However, Jackson, Serkis, and screenwriters Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou are sure to find a solution.
