Mozilla is discontinuing Pocket, the convenient bookmarking service that allows users to save articles and webpages for future reference. The organization has announced that Pocket will cease operations on July 8th, 2025, as Mozilla shifts its focus toward projects that align more closely with users’ browsing habits and online requirements.
After the shutdown, users will only have the ability to export their saved items until October 8th, 2025, when Mozilla will permanently erase all user data. Additionally, Mozilla will automatically cancel subscriptions and will provide prorated refunds to those subscribed to its annual plan starting from July 8th.
The Pocket web extension and app were removed on May 22nd, 2025, although users who had previously installed the app can still re-download it until October 8th.
According to Mozilla, the decision to shut down Pocket stems from the changing ways in which people save and consume web content. However, Pocket’s email newsletter, previously known as Pocket Hits, will transition to a new name, “Ten Tabs,” although it will no longer include a weekend edition.
In addition to the closure of Pocket, Mozilla is also discontinuing its fake review detection tool, Fakespot. Mozilla explained, “We acquired Fakespot in 2023 to assist users in navigating unreliable product reviews through AI and privacy-focused technology. While the concept was promising, it didn’t fit a sustainable business model.” The Review Checker tool powered by Fakespot will also be shut down on June 10th, 2025.
“This transition enables us to help shape the future of the internet, introducing features like vertical tabs, intelligent search, and more AI-driven tools,” Mozilla states. “We are committed to developing a browser that works harder for you: more personalized, more powerful, and always proudly independent.”
