Meta has started testing the display of 3D photos on Instagram for users viewing their feed via a Meta Quest VR headset.
In a blog post, Meta stated, “Through our AI view synthesis algorithms, we can convert existing photos in the Instagram feed pixel by pixel—no specialized 3D cameras necessary. This allows flat images that weren’t originally taken in 3D to be automatically turned into an immersive format, providing a sense of depth for 2D images when viewed on Quest.”
The testing phase begins this week. Meta has noted, “Not all users will have access to 3D Instagram photos on Quest, and even if you’re part of the testing group, it may take some time for the feature to appear.” This isn’t the first endeavor into 3D photographs; Meta introduced a similar feature for Facebook back in 2018.
The introduction of 3D photos for Instagram is part of the v77 update for Meta Quest, which also brings several other new features. One exciting addition currently being tested is Navigator, described by Meta as “a centralized hub for your games, apps, notifications, essential settings, and more on Quest.”
Users can access Navigator by pressing the Meta or Oculus button on the right controller. It provides quick access to recently used apps and allows you to pin up to 10 items for easier navigation. More details about Navigator can be found in a video on Meta’s website.
Additionally, the v77 update includes experimental support for Bluetooth Low Energy audio devices, the ability to select a window that follows your movements, and consolidates Meta Quest Link, casting, and remote desktop functionalities into a single PC application, called Horizon for PC.
