Sony has unveiled an upgraded version of its versatile shooting grip and compact tripod, now featuring wireless controls via a detachable remote. Previous models allowed users to manage basic camera functions while gripping the device, but the new GP-VPT3 enhances convenience for solo content creators who can operate their camera while positioned in front of it.
The older model is still available for $139.99, while the added features of the new GP-VPT3 Multi-Function Shooting Grip come at a slight increase in price to $159.99. For those who don’t need the grip or prefer to keep their current one, the remote, known as the RMT-VP2 Wireless Remote Commander, is available separately for $89.99.
The GP-VPT3 is compatible with Sony’s Alpha Series cameras as well as smaller vlogging devices like the recent ZV-E10 II. It can support a weight of up to 3.3 pounds, allowing the use of larger lenses, provided they don’t extend too far beyond the camera, which could upset its center of balance.
The RMT-VP2 remote connects to compatible Sony cameras via Bluetooth, with a range of approximately 33 feet. It features a shutter button, a movie record button, a rocker for zoom or focus control, a toggle for autofocus, and a customizable C1 button for additional functions.
Like its predecessors, the GP-VPT3 connects to cameras through the tripod mount and boasts a flexible head, allowing for tilting and 360-degree rotation. It serves as an ergonomic handle, placing essential camera controls within easy reach for one-handed shooting. Additionally, it can be unfolded to act as a short tripod, making it simple to set up your camera at the perfect angle for time-lapses or self-recording.
