After over a year of development, the company introduced a new version of the Vestaboard called the Smart Bits, which offered “a completely new way to experience Vestaboard’s patented character units” while advancing “the limits of design, engineering, and manufacturing,” as stated by founder and CEO Dorrian Porter. However, due to the economic uncertainty caused by President Trump’s tariffs on goods from China, the company shifted its focus and created the Note instead.
The Note functions similarly to the original Vestaboard but features only 45 split-flap mechanisms, referred to as Bits, rather than the original 132. Each Bit can display 64 alphanumeric characters along with additional symbols such as punctuation, solid colors, and a newly incorporated red heart. The display itself measures 24.5 inches wide or 28.4 inches with an optional bezel frame, which adds $169 to the retail price.
Messages, patterns, and images can be designed through a web interface or via a complimentary mobile app available for both iOS and Android. These creations can be transmitted to the Note using Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. Besides a library filled with pre-existing designs and motivational quotes, the app allows for scheduling messages, sending them to friends who also own Vestaboards, and silencing notifications during designated times. While the sound of over 2,800 rotating flaps can be captivating, you definitely won’t want the Vestaboard Note to disturb your sleep in the middle of the night.
