While the Google I/O keynote primarily focused on AI, several other significant updates were revealed outside the spotlight. Alongside enhancements for Google Wallet, developer sessions unveiled useful features set to arrive on smartwatches, the Google Play Store, and Google TV.
Here’s a summary of the updates that didn’t receive emphasis during the keynote.
Live Updates Coming to Smartwatches
Google is set to introduce Live Updates—a functionality that allows users to monitor the status of various activities within delivery, rideshare, and navigation apps—on smartwatches. While this feature was previously announced for smartphones running Android 16, Aaron Labiaga from Google confirmed during a developer session, noted by Android Authority, that it will roll out to wearables in “late 2026.”
A similar feature, known as Live Activities, is already available on Apple’s watchOS devices, providing users with quick status updates.
