Code Dreams: Opera's AI Browser Crafts While...

Opera has unveiled its latest web browser, Opera Neon, which integrates AI agents designed to assist users by navigating the internet on their behalf. The Norwegian tech firm characterizes Opera Neon as an “agentic browser,” equipped with contextual understanding to undertake tasks such as researching, creating, and designing as needed.

According to Henrik Lexow, Opera’s senior AI product director, “We are at a stage where AI can drastically transform how we engage with the internet and carry out various browser tasks.” He emphasized that “Opera Neon brings this innovation directly to our users.”

A standout feature is its AI engine, which Opera claims can “understand and interpret” user requests, leveraging cloud-based AI agents to fulfill them. For instance, Opera Neon is capable of creating games, reports, code snippets, and websites, managing multiple tasks even while the user is offline.

While Opera has not disclosed a launch date or pricing details, it has labeled Neon as a “premium subscription product,” which leaves limited information about its functionalities and capabilities.

In addition, Neon provides AI tools akin to those offered by Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s Operator. Users can access a chatbot interface for web searches, answering questions, and obtaining “contextual information” from the active webpage. The browser also features an AI Agent, previously known as “Browser Operator,” which enables automation of routine online tasks such as shopping, completing forms, and booking travel accommodations. Notably, Opera asserts that this tool interacts with web content locally to maintain user privacy and security.

Information about Opera Neon is still limited, making it the fifth addition to the company’s browser lineup, following the introduction of its mindfulness-oriented Air browser in February. More information about Opera Neon’s actual capabilities will become available once it enters beta testing, though a definitive timeline remains uncertain as the company has not provided a specific date.
