Discord is currently beta testing a new in-app currency called “Discord Orbs,” which users can redeem for digital items. Peter Sellis, Discord’s SVP of product, shared this news via email to The Verge. Users can earn Orbs by completing promotional Quests within the app, which reward participants for engaging with advertiser content such as videos or sharing specific games with friends.
Users can spend their Orbs in the Discord Shop on regular items, but they can also redeem them for exclusive rewards like special badges or 3-day trial passes for Discord Nitro, the platform’s subscription service. Initially, Discord is rolling out Orbs to a limited number of users worldwide before expanding to a larger audience. If you’re involved in the beta testing for Orbs, you will receive a notification about it.
Previously, brands or publishers offering Quests were responsible for providing their own rewards, including items like avatar decorations or in-game bonuses. According to Discord spokesperson Bradley Sheets in an email to The Verge, they can still offer these rewards, but now awarding Orbs provides an additional option for engagement.
