Unlocking Phantom Jobs: A Guide to FFXIV’s…

In the FFXIV: Dawntrail Occult Crescent field operation, players can engage with Phantom Jobs. These mini-jobs offer unique abilities to enhance your combat experience. Each job levels up individually through EXP earned in the Occult Crescent, and as of patch 7.25, there are a total of 13 available.

It’s worth mentioning that the tutorial booklet mentions in the “Unlocking Phantom Jobs” section, “Soul shards are obtained from treasure chests, certain critical encounters, and more.” However, we have yet to discover a soul shard in a treasure chest. While this does not eliminate the possibility, we cannot currently confirm which job shards specifically come from chests.

All players will begin with the Phantom Freelancer job, but there are additional jobs to unlock. Several methods exist for acquiring the various Phantom Jobs in FFXIV, as outlined below.

Completing Occult Crescent Quests

The first method to unlock several Phantom Jobs is by completing Occult Crescent quests. This job acts essentially as a tutorial, so you won’t have much trouble engaging with the NPCs and finishing it as part of the Occult Crescent storyline.

By finishing the quest “New Job, Old Tricks,” you will unlock three jobs: Knight, Monk, and Bard.

Purchasing with Silver and Gold Coins

The merchant at the base camp, known as the “Expedition Antiquarian,” sells job shards for a significant price in the “battlecraft items” category using your available currency.

Once you acquire the job shards, you can use them directly from your inventory, just like you would with a minion or potion, to add them to your available options.

Completing Specific Critical Encounters

Three critical encounters provide a chance to drop job shards, which are marked on the map below.

Keep in mind that these drops are not guaranteed from the encounters mentioned above. In my experience, a shard has dropped roughly 50% of the time, but this is not an official drop rate. Just continue to engage in them as they appear, and you’ll eventually obtain a soul shard.
