Twitch Rolls Out Vertical Livestreams for a...

At TwitchCon Europe, Twitch unveiled a series of exciting updates, including the introduction of vertical livestreams and an open beta test that enables creators to broadcast in higher quality.

The new vertical streaming feature aims to enhance the viewing experience on mobile devices by accommodating portrait mode. In the future, streamers won’t have to choose between vertical and horizontal formats; instead, Twitch plans to allow dual-format streaming. Testing for this feature will begin this summer with a select group of channels, with a broader rollout expected later in the year.

Additionally, Twitch is introducing an open beta for “2k streaming,” which allows creators to stream at 1440p resolution and will be accessible to all Twitch partners and affiliates. According to a support page, “Upgrading to 2k (1440p) streaming offers a noticeable enhancement over 1080p streaming, providing richer details, greater clarity, and improved performance – whether gaming, creating art, or engaging in casual chats.” Previously, this feature was only available through a limited beta.

The platform is also rolling out a rewind feature for streams, allowing viewers to catch up on missed moments or revisit their favorite parts. This feature will initially be tested with a small group of users this summer.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy hinted at the upcoming vertical streaming and many other enhancements for the platform in a letter released in February, looking ahead to 2025.
