Finding Love in the Digital Realm: Inside Issa Rae’s Black Mirror Journey

The TV series Black Mirror often leaves viewers’ heads spinning, but for Issa Rae, her participation felt familiar compared to the fan-favorite episode “San Junipero.” Speaking about her episode, “Hotel Reverie,” Rae noted its thematic parallels to previous installments, especially its exploration of a queer love story in a virtual reality space, reminiscent of “San Junipero.”

During a press junket, Rae elaborated that only Black Mirror creator and writer Charlie Brooker could confirm the deliberate intent, yet she felt a strong connection between the two episodes. The interrelated nature of the Black Mirror universe, with Easter eggs and self-referencing episodes, suggests a link. Rae expressed hope that audiences could enjoy them both as unique but complementary narratives.

In “Hotel Reverie,” Rae plays Brandy Friday, an actress starring in a simulated remake of a fictional 1940s romance, where most actors are AI-generated, and the environment is virtual. Brandy takes on the role of Dr. Alex Palmer, originally played by a fictional British actor. The narrative blends multiple layers as Rae embodies Brandy, who then portrays a character within this virtual film.

Rae described the challenges of playing a male actor from the past, emphasizing the complexities involved. Brandy relished the opportunity to break away from stereotypical roles, diving into her character’s backstory and developing a fascination with her co-star’s mysterious past.

Throughout the episode, Brandy is captivated by Clara, portrayed by Emma Corrin, who originally played a tragic heiress in the 1940s movie. Rae connects with Brandy’s parallel to Dorothy, the actress behind Clara, finding shared vulnerability and untapped potential.

The AI interaction with Brandy renders the experience intense and raises philosophical questions about personhood as the AI evolves. Rae likens such scenarios to an interaction with deceased historical figures, expressing intrigue and an imagined emotional connection.

Off-screen, Rae credits bonding activities for creating chemistry with co-star Emma Corrin. Director Haolu Wang facilitated these exercises, fostering connection and authenticity necessary for portraying characters from disparate worlds and eras. Rae’s admiration for Emma’s transformation into a 1940s starlet further accentuated Brandy’s on-screen wonder.

Overall, Rae cherished the collaborative experience, engaged by Corrin’s performance and the compelling narrative woven in “Hotel Reverie.
