Conquering Heights and Valleys: BougeRV's Formidable Electric Wagon

I’m not one to boast, but I do consider myself quite knowledgeable about folding wagons. However, I had never tested one with a motor until I tried out BougeRV’s new Electric Foldable Wagon.

I own a small surf shack approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the parking lot, and I often find myself lugging supplies and sports equipment back and forth. I’ve tried various folding carts, ranging from $40 for short-lived options to $250 from reputable brands, and even up to $800 for top-tier models. Yet, none have made hauling 200 kg (about 440 pounds) over steep inclines as effortless as the BougeRV electric wagon.

While it costs $399.99 and has its quirks, it’s undoubtedly worth the price if you’re frequently transporting heavy loads over hilly terrain.

BougeRV, the company that brought us the impressive lantern I recently reviewed, specializes in luxury glamping gear for vanlifers and outdoor enthusiasts. Although its name might sound a bit like the colloquial term “bougie,” perhaps that’s part of the charm?

This electric folding wagon from the Chinese company easily tackled 5% and 10% grade hills (as recorded by my Garmin bike computer), which used to leave me breathless before even donning my wetsuit. With full throttle, the cart follows effortlessly with just a need for steering, making its price point justifiable for some.

The wagon offers an impressive 180-liter capacity that can expand to 250 liters when the tailgate is opened and boasts numerous tie-down points for bungee cord usage. This feature proves particularly useful when transporting oversized items like kiteboards or deflated paddleboards. It can comfortably accommodate a few children, an adult sitting cross-legged, or an older dog with its supplies.

Equipped with nearly silent rear-wheel drive motors generating 11Nm of torque, the wagon still requires human input to get moving at low, medium, or high speeds. I found medium and high settings aligned well with my typical NYC-paced strolls. The wagon can also reverse electronically, which aids in positioning heavy loads.

BougeRV claims the electric wagons are “typically weather-resistant” and can handle light rain or dampness but cautions against prolonged heavy rain exposure to protect motor and battery components. Although lacking an official IP rating for water or dust ingress, the wagon remained functional after being left in light rain and windblown sand. I would recommend purchasing a cover and removing the battery when storing outside.

Operating the wagon is a bit unconventional, with two yellow throttle levers on the handle for speed control and two red sliders to engage the electronic brake. This allows for single-handed control, using either hand. When strolling, it’s best to peg the throttle to maximum due to excessive vibration. It’s advisable to get accustomed to the operation before venturing into busy areas.

The display on the handle is difficult to read in sunlight, and my review unit had segments that remained unlit. There’s an on/off button and a speed control button. The wagon turns off automatically after idling and beeps when folded without being powered off.

The braking system, though varied, may not be effective when loaded on inclines. The electronic brake struggles to prevent the wagon from rolling down even moderate slopes, so it’s better to use the footbrake in such situations.

The throttle can become unpredictable downhill, making it necessary to apply power to prevent the motor from braking and causing drag. I found it more efficient to switch off power when descending and use the extended handle for leverage, which requires halting and using both hands but is manageable.

The wagon handles well on various surfaces and terrain, but sand accumulation can impede movement. Though I’d prefer tires for cushioned rides and easier terrain coverage, the plastic wheels help keep costs low and maintenance minimal.

BougeRV states a maximum range of 12 miles (19 km) on a 133Wh battery, which charges via USB-C and serves as a power bank. After over 5 km of testing with significant loads, the battery remained over 75% charged, which is impressive for its size.

Overall, I am quite impressed by the BougeRV Electric Foldable Wagon. It effortlessly conquers steep hills and substantial loads, boasts ample range, and folds neatly for convenient transportation. Though it has its limitations, especially on slopes, its $400 price is justifiable for those who need reliable, heavy-duty carting.
