The iconic rock bands of the ’80s and ’90s—such as Journey, Queen, Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, and Metallica—garnered a cultural status that transcended their music, videos, and tours. Some of these arena rockers even ventured into the realm of video games, often with mixed outcomes, a trend that has since diminished. Today, major artists are more likely to appear in popular titles like Fortnite or Beat Saber, or in mobile games tailored to their brands.
However, one indie developer is on a quest to revive the rock band-themed video game. Nicola Piovesan, the head of Chaosmonger Studio, is channeling his long-standing admiration for the band Voivod into a new game titled Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior.
If Voivod isn’t on your radar, it may be due to their lesser-known status within the Canadian thrash and speed metal scene over the last four decades. While they haven’t achieved the same global commercial success as Metallica or Aerosmith, this Quebec-based band holds a significant and influential place in various metal genres. Like other esteemed metal groups such as Megadeth and Iron Maiden, Voivod boasts a distinct artistic style and a mascot known as Voivod.
The character Voivod, conceived by Michel “Away” Langevin, the band’s drummer, features prominently in Langevin’s post-nuclear fiction depicted in their album art and illustrations. Voivod hails from the dystopian sci-fi fantasy realm of Morgoth. Langevin has been the driving force behind Voivod’s visual identity, influencing Piovesan with his unique artistic and musical approach.
