Another year, another AI-generated deepfake featuring Katy Perry at the Met Gala, and, once again, she wasn’t actually there.

Images of the pop star in a stunning black designer gown made their rounds on social media during Monday night’s event, aligning with the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme. However, these visuals were created using artificial intelligence. Perry swiftly clarified that she was not in attendance at the Met gala; she was busy on tour.

Perry’s Response

“I couldn’t make it to the MET because I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (catch me in Houston tomorrow IRL),” she shared on Instagram, accompanying the fake images.

She further commented on the AI confusion, saying: “P.S. this year, I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots… but I’m sending prayers to the rest of you.”

The Repeated Hoax

This incident marks the second consecutive year that Perry has gone viral for a deepfake Met Gala ensemble. In 2024, a digitally altered image of her in a floral ball gown tricked thousands, including her own mother.

The sophistication of these deepfakes is increasing, making them tougher to identify. A misleading post claiming Perry donned a never-before-seen Mugler fabric amassed over 400K views, misleadingly credited to Getty Images.

The proliferation of convincing AI-generated content is raising alarms, especially as it manages to deceive not just fans, but relatives as well.

AI is now fabricating celebrity appearances for events they don’t attend, and millions continue to be fooled.

As Perry continues her “Lifetimes Tour” with her next show in Houston, the online community remains in a constant struggle to discern the real from the algorithm-generated.

Are deepfakes becoming the new face of celebrity public relations?
