Android Phones to Auto-Reboot After Extended Lock Periods

Android is introducing a new security feature that will automatically reboot devices if they remain unlocked for an extended period, enhancing data protection by making unauthorized access more difficult. This feature is part of the latest Google Play services update, which mandates that Android phones will restart themselves if left locked for three consecutive days. Users will then need to enter their passcode to access the device again.

According to 9to5Google, this update is expected to cover both Android phones and tablets but will not extend to other device categories like Auto, TV, and WearOS. The reboot feature, distinct from a full device reset to factory settings, places phones and tablets in a Before First Unlock (BFU) state. This state encrypts data files and disables biometric login options until the device PIN is entered.

We have reached out to Google for details on when the Google Play services 25.14 update will be available and which Android devices will support this new auto-reboot feature. These Android feature updates typically take about a week or two to become accessible.

It remains uncertain if devices will inform users about the reason for an automatic reboot. However, it’s worth noting that Android phones already provide a notification on the PIN screen, prompting users to enter their passcode for a full unlock after a reboot.
