Buy Games Directly: Xbox Mobile App Feature Set to Launch

Xbox is introducing a new feature that allows users to buy games and DLC, along with signing up for Game Pass, directly from its mobile app. However, this update comes with a caveat: remote play will no longer be accessible within the Xbox app.

The update is initially being released for beta testers on iOS and Android, with a promise from Xbox to expand availability to all users “soon.”

In October, Xbox president Sarah Bond announced the company’s plan to enable game purchases and gameplay through the Xbox app, shortly after a court mandated Google to allow third-party app stores on Android. However, the feature won’t include playing games within the app as initially promised. This was expected to launch in November, but was delayed due to a “temporary administrative stay.”

Once Microsoft fully implements in-app game purchases, users will see a “Buy” button on game pages, provided they have a payment method saved. Additionally, users can preorder games, set them to preinstall on their Xbox, and redeem Game Pass Ultimate perks. This update marks a shift, as the app previously supported game purchases without the inclusion of remote play.

Although remote play will be discontinued in the app, Xbox assures users that it can still be accessed through mobile browsers. Furthermore, Xbox plans to extend remote play functionality to supported Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets.

Other updates for Xbox are also on the horizon, such as allowing Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to stream selected games they own directly from Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, eliminating the need to download them before playing. Xbox has also expanded its “stream your own game” collection with titles like Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Subnautica 2.

Additionally, Xbox has introduced a new game hub feature that provides “relevant information” about a game, including player stats, achievements, friends who are currently playing, events, and available add-ons.
