Google has introduced an innovative AI-driven experiment designed to enhance language learning, challenging Duolingo in the process.
This week, Google Labs unveiled a suite of tools referred to as Little Language Experiments, powered by its Gemini AI model. The aim is to make language learning quicker, more intuitive, and decidedly less formal.
This collection features three compact tools:
- Tiny Lesson: Teaches helpful phrases for everyday situations, such as asking for assistance at the airport or addressing a lost passport
- Slang Hang: Simulates realistic dialogues between native speakers, complete with clickable slang and cultural insights
- Word Cam: Utilizes your phone’s camera to identify objects and provide their labels in the target language

All of these resources leverage Gemini, Google’s advanced multimodal large language model that processes text, images, and more. This technology underpins various AI features across Google’s products in Search, Workspace, and Android.
What’s new
Acquiring a new language involves more than just rote memorization; it’s about communicating like a real person. That’s precisely what Google aims to achieve.
Many platforms (including Duolingo) often leave learners sounding overly formal or mechanical. With features like Slang Hang, Google aspires to connect textbook knowledge with practical fluency.
In Google’s own words: “These experiments aren’t intended to replace traditional study, but to enhance it: assisting learners in forming habits, maintaining engagement, and integrating learning into their daily routines.”
Meanwhile, Duolingo is going all-in on AI:
- Recently announced 148 AI-generated courses, almost doubling its content library
- Replacing human contributors with AI “where feasible”
- Employing generative AI for recruitment and performance assessments
Since launching its Max subscription tier in 2023, Duolingo has leaned heavily into AI, now taking it a step further, though not all users are thrilled.
