This week, OpenAI’s ChatGPT surprised users with a chilling voice error that many are likening to a scene from a horror film.

A Reddit thread that went viral detailed how ChatGPT’s typically calm “Sol” voice morphed into a screeching, unsettling distortion.

A popular post in the r/OpenAI subreddit highlighted how ChatGPT’s “Sol” voice, meant to convey a “savvy and relaxed” demeanor, unexpectedly deteriorated into a chaotic, screeching sound.

Users reported crackling static that escalated into furious, distorted shrieks, dubbing the experience both “hilarious and terrifying.”

This wasn’t an isolated incident.

Others shared similar eerie experiences, describing random high-pitched whistling, warped laughter, and abrupt voice changes every few paragraphs. “It’s a nightmare room,” wrote one Reddit user.

In August 2024, OpenAI introduced an enhanced Voice Mode, which demonstrated remarkably human-like interactions, including sounds of inhalation, coughing, and laughter.

This feature received praise for its realism, but it also sparked concerns regarding the discomfort that arises when AI becomes “too human.”

Wired’s Reece Rogers had anticipated this unease, as he encountered eerie static and disconcerting gasps while testing Voice Mode, describing the experience as “chilling.”

The unsettling reality

Internal safety tests conducted by OpenAI uncovered significant bugs.
