OpenAI is transforming ChatGPT into a shopping assistant, marking the beginning of a new era of “conversational commerce” that poses a direct challenge to major players like Google, Amazon, and review-focused media sites.

On April 28, OpenAI launched a significant shopping feature in ChatGPT, which provides users with:

  • Tailored product suggestions
  • Comparative pricing options
  • Product reviews and links for direct purchases

This feature is available to all users, including free, Plus, and even logged-out visitors.

“We aim to introduce a new kind of shopping experience through conversation in ChatGPT,” stated Matt Weaver, OpenAI’s Solutions Head for EMEA.

How It Works

Users can now request shopping advice through ChatGPT, such as “best red t-shirt under $30,” and receive visual representations, retailer options, user reviews, and shopping links.

According to OpenAI, the product results are determined by AI algorithms rather than ads or sponsored content.

ChatGPT currently handles over a billion searches each week. It is now in direct competition with:

  • Google, which leads in search but is losing traction on commercial queries
  • Amazon, which has launched its own AI shopping assistant
  • Content publishers, who rely on affiliate links for revenue generated from reviews

A Game-Changer

ChatGPT intends to streamline the shopping journey by consolidating research, comparison, review, and purchasing into a single chat interface.
