The mooInk V features an 8-inch touchscreen utilizing E Ink’s Gallery 3 display technology. Unlike the Kindle Colorsoft’s Kaleido 3 screen, which uses a color filter on a black-and-white E Ink panel and is limited to 4,096 shades, Gallery 3 employs colored ink capsules capable of producing over 50,000 shades at 300ppi resolution. Currently, only a few devices incorporate Gallery 3 technology, such as the Remarkable Paper Pro from last year.
While E Ink has previously shown folding e-reader prototypes, its display technology is thicker than OLED panels. This thickness makes it challenging to design a reliable hinge and a durable screen for everyday use. This complexity has contributed to Readmoo’s extended development time for the folding panel in the mooInk V e-reader.
The mooInk V boasts a body crafted from a lightweight yet sturdy aluminum-magnesium alloy coated with a silver metallic finish. It weighs approximately 225 grams, just slightly more than the Kindle Colorsoft. Although specific dimensions are not disclosed, the folded device is smaller than a paperback, potentially offering more convenience for slipping it into a pocket than a Kindle. The e-reader can unfold flat for reading or be held at a 90-degree angle, mimicking the feel of a print book. However, the comfort of holding it this way remains to be assessed.
Unlike phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, the two sides of the mooInk V do not fold perfectly flat. A noticeable gap near the hinge reduces stress and potential damage at the fold of the E Ink panel. This design makes the mooInk V the first folding e-reader available to consumers.
