Amazon, one of the trailblazers in the e-reader market, has long been a dominant player with its expansive Kindle series, offering various models each with distinct benefits and drawbacks. Most devices serve as straightforward ebook readers; however, with the introduction of the Kindle Scribe, Amazon is venturing beyond just reading to incorporate writing capabilities, moving future Kindles closer to the feel of traditional paper.

What are “ad-supported” Kindles?

Amazon offers Kindle e-readers with different storage capacities and the choice of ad-supported or no-ad versions. Ad-supported variants display personalized ads on the lock screen and the homescreen when connected to Wi-Fi. Generally, you save about $20 by opting for the ad-supported option, though you can pay a one-time fee later to remove ads.

A new entry-level Kindle was released in October, replacing the older 2022 model. Starting at $109.99, the latest Kindle features a brighter 94-nit display, improved contrast, faster page turns, and a new "matcha" green color option. It maintains the same six-inch 300ppi screen, USB-C support, and 16GB base storage as its predecessor.

In the past, the newest ad-supported Kindle dropped to $84.99 with three months of Kindle Unlimited. Currently, it’s available for $109.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target.

Amazon updated its kid-friendly Kindle in late 2024. The new Kindle Kids model, retailing at $129.99, is similar to the standard edition but includes accessories and access to age-appropriate content. It comes with a case, a two-year warranty, and six months of Amazon Kids Plus. This subscription gives children access to books, games, and videos.

The Kindle Kids edition was once priced as low as $94.99. Right now, it’s retailing at $129.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target.

Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite, part of its 12th-gen lineup, features USB-C charging, a crisp 300ppi display, IPX8 waterproofing, and a larger seven-inch display. The ad-free Signature Edition costs $199.99 and includes 32GB storage, wireless charging, and an adaptive backlight. There’s also a Kids version for $179.99, with a protective cover and Amazon Kids Plus.

The Kindle Paperwhite previously dropped to $129.99, but it’s now available at $159.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. Bundle options are also available.

The ad-free Signature Edition retails for $199.99 at Amazon and Best Buy. Bundle offers include various covers and charging docks.

Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite Kids is also available for $179.99. It’s similar to the regular version but includes parental controls and comes with a protective cover, warranty, and Amazon Kids Plus.

The Kindle Scribe, Amazon’s largest e-reader with a 10.2-inch display, includes a stylus for note-taking, with Active Canvas and AI features to organize notes. It’s currently at a low of $324.99 at Amazon and Best Buy, with bundle options available.

Amazon’s first color e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, has a seven-inch display with color capability, making it ideal for comics. Initially discounted to $229.99 for Prime members, it now retails at $279.99 at Amazon and Best Buy, with bundle offers available.
