Ecobee has unveiled an update for its Smart Doorbell Camera, introducing compatibility with Google’s Home app and smart displays. Initially launched in late 2023 with support for Apple Home and Amazon Alexa, the integration with Google’s smart home ecosystem was expected in 2024. Although this Google integration has arrived a year later than anticipated, it enhances the distinctive features of Ecobee’s smart doorbell, which can operate with the company’s smart thermostat as a video intercom.
With this update, users can now view live video from Ecobee’s doorbell camera via the Google Home mobile app and smart displays such as the Google Nest Hub. Voice commands through Google Assistant can also be utilized to access the camera. Additionally, users can communicate with visitors through the doorbell’s speaker and receive alerts on Google Home devices when the doorbell is activated.
This new feature positions Ecobee’s $160 Smart Doorbell Camera as a more economical alternative to the $180 wired Nest Doorbell. However, while Google’s model offers three hours of complimentary event recording, Ecobee’s unit does not provide any free video storage options, whether in the cloud or locally. To save motion-activated video clips in the cloud for 30 days, a subscription of $5 per month or $50 per year is required.
