Minecraft has officially ended support for virtual reality and mixed reality devices. Mojang announced last year that it would cease support for VR headsets after March 2025, and as detailed in today’s patch notes for the Minecraft: Bedrock Edition 1.21.80 Update, that support has now been removed, as noted by PCWorld.
When Mojang disclosed the end of VR support back in October, they reassured players that updates will continue to be available for PC users, and that gameplay without a VR or MR device would still be possible. Players can still build worlds and access any Marketplace purchases. Mojang’s explanation for this decision was that “our ability to support VR / MR devices has come to an end.”
Nonetheless, there are still options to play Minecraft in virtual reality if desired. If you own the Java version of the game on PC, you can utilize mods like Vivecraft, compatible with various VR platforms, or QuestCraft, specifically made for Meta Quest headsets.
It’s a bit disheartening to see official VR support for Minecraft come to a close, especially for those of us who fondly remember the stunning Minecraft demo for HoloLens from years ago.
