HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has officially announced its lead cast: Dominic McLaughlin will take on the role of the iconic Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton portraying Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
In a news release on Tuesday, executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod expressed their excitement about finding the right actors to depict these beloved characters.
“Following an extensive search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are thrilled to announce our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,” Gardiner and Mylod stated. “The talent these three young actors possess is truly remarkable, and we look forward to sharing their onscreen magic with the world. We also extend our gratitude to the tens of thousands of children who auditioned—it’s been a joy to discover so much incredible young talent.”
These three actors join an expanding ensemble for the reimagined adaptation of the Harry Potter book series, which includes Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore.
HBO has stated that this reboot of Harry Potter aims to be “a faithful adaptation of the cherished books by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling,” with each season intended to introduce Harry Potter to both new and established audiences.
The announcement for the new Harry Potter television series came in 2023, presenting a vision for a “decade-long series” based on Rowling’s seven-book narrative. The studio assured fans that the show will be produced with the same high level of craftsmanship, care, and dedication characteristic of this global franchise. Rowling has remarked that this fresh live-action adaptation will provide a depth and detail that can only be achieved through a long-form television series.
While HBO has yet to announce a release date for the Harry Potter series, it is clear that it will not premiere before the streaming service Max transitions back to being known as HBO Max.
