After nearly 15 years since the last installment in the Final Destination horror franchise, writer-directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein—known for their work on Freaks—have breathed new life into the series with Final Destination: Bloodlines. This modern take quickly became the highest-grossing film in the franchise’s history.

The latest film revisits the theme of death as a relentless force that hunts down survivors of a catastrophic event. While it pays homage to the filmmaking style of earlier entries, it introduces a fresh perspective: one survivor from the initial disaster has lived long enough to have children and grandchildren, making them targets as well.

In a recent interview with Polygon, Lipovsky and Stein shared that Bloodlines emphasizes a stronger emotional bond between viewers and the characters. Stein highlighted that the dynamic of a family coming together to confront death—rather than the typical group of friends or random strangers—adds complexity and depth, making the audience genuinely care about their fate. The way the family processes their grief as they face the loss of loved ones also amplifies the urgency of their protective instincts.

However, they’ve acknowledged that the familial twists in the plot regarding who survives and who doesn’t have sparked significant questions among fans. They want audiences to grasp the film’s logic concerning life and death.

Set in 1968, the film follows a young woman named Iris (played by Brec Bassinger) who foresees a catastrophic collapse of a new skyscraper restaurant during its grand opening, which results in the deaths of everyone present, including her fiancé Paul and their unborn child. She manages to warn everyone in time to escape before the disaster strikes, allowing her to live a lengthy life, during which she bears two children, Howard and Darlene, who then go on to have their own kids, including Stefani (played by Kaitlyn Santa Juana), the main protagonist of Bloodlines. However, Iris’s incessant predictions of doom alienate her from her family, leading to estrangement.

In present-day scenes, Stefani, a college student, starts experiencing horrifying visions that parallel Iris’s original premonition. Her quest leads her to reconnect with
