Nintendo has announced a new feature for Switch 2 owners, allowing them to enable a setting that prevents their system’s battery from charging beyond approximately 90%. This initiative aims to extend the battery’s lifespan and was unveiled through the Nintendo Today app on Monday.
According to Nintendo, when this feature is activated, “The Nintendo Switch 2 system stops charging when it reaches about 90% remaining battery.” They explained, “Pausing the charge at around 90% helps to reduce battery deterioration.” It was also noted that with the “Stop Charging Around 90%” option enabled, the charging speed will decrease as it approaches that 90% threshold.
Users can easily enable this feature through the main interface of the Switch 2 by navigating to System Settings > System > Stop Charging Around 90%.
This option is similar to settings found on many smartphones, tablets, and laptops, which allow users to limit the maximum charge of lithium-ion batteries, typically to 80-85%, in order to prolong battery health. Valve is also experimenting with a similar feature for the Steam Deck in a beta client update. Their patch notes from last week mentioned, “Limiting the charge limit to 80% can be beneficial for long-term battery health,” particularly for users who keep their Steam Deck constantly charged or rarely allow the battery to fully deplete.
Switch 2 users may often experience the scenario described by Valve if they frequently use their systems while docked and connected to a TV, or regularly play without fully draining the battery.
