Glitch: A Digital Farewell

Glitch, the platform where developers can share and remix projects, is set to discontinue its primary service: hosting applications on the web. In a recent announcement, Glitch CEO Anil Dash revealed that hosting will cease and user profiles will be closed on July 8th, 2025. However, he did not indicate that the platform would be shutting down entirely.

Users will still be able to access their dashboards and download their project code until the end of 2025, and Glitch is developing a new feature that will enable users to redirect their project subdomains. Additionally, the platform has paused the acceptance of new Pro subscriptions but will continue to support existing ones until July 8th.

With the removal of these essential features, the future of Glitch remains uncertain. In response to inquiries from The Verge, Dash confirmed that the dashboard, app redirects, and code download options are the only confirmed features that will remain available post-July 8th. He noted, “Any further updates or features will be shared in due course, but for now, it’s a very limited set of functionalities.”

Glitch was launched by Dash in 2017 under Fog Creek Software and was acquired by the cloud service provider Fastly in 2022. In his blog post regarding the changes, Dash explained that the costs and resources associated with hosting apps have significantly increased over time, exacerbated by misuse of the platform. Nonetheless, he mentioned in discussions with The Verge that the team is still contemplating potential future plans for Glitch and its community.
