GPD Win Max 2: The Mini Laptop That Packs a Gaming Punch

Since the release of Neuromancer in 1984, which captured the imagination of the sci-fi community, tech enthusiasts have dreamed of owning a “cyberdeck”—the ideal personal, portable computer for exploring and tampering with the digital world. Typically, these devices are crafted by users themselves. However, the 10-inch GPD Win Max 2 stands out as the nearest thing to a commercially available cyberdeck that’s genuinely worth purchasing.

While it may not rank as the top laptop or gaming device, the GPD Win Max 2 represents a significant ergonomic compromise in five ways, and its webcam leaves much to be desired! Nevertheless, it embodies the promise of portable computing. It can serve as a gaming device with joysticks and buttons cleverly hidden within its design. Additionally, it can function as a desktop gaming PC thanks to a rare Oculink port that accommodates a powerful external GPU. With more full-sized ports than most compact laptops and dual SSD slots, along with at least 32GB of RAM, it’s a robust option.

Crucially, it features one of the best keyboards I’ve encountered on such a compact device, allowing for an effortless typing experience. Currently, I’m composing these words at my usual pace on the Win Max 2, having spent countless hours using this 10-inch machine for work without any issues. I even managed to edit a recent video right on this tiny computer.

GPD has been developing compact laptops for nearly a decade, and this model tantalizingly approaches a product I’d consider purchasing—if the company could just make a few essential changes.
