Microsoft is unveiling its new Surface Pro tablet today, featuring a sleek 12-inch display and significant design updates from the larger 13-inch Surface Pro 11. Dubbed the Surface Pro 12-inch, this Arm-powered device serves as a modern alternative to the earlier, more compact Surface Go tablet. Notably, Microsoft has opted for a fan-less design, has eliminated the Surface Connect charging port, and introduced substantial keyboard enhancements, ensuring that this new model is a step up from the 10.5-inch Surface Go 4 it replaces.
I had the opportunity to experience the new Surface Pro 12-inch model at Microsoft’s headquarters last month, and I’m genuinely impressed with the numerous changes incorporated into this smaller device.

The Surface Pro 12-inch is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, all at a price of $799. This latest Snapdragon X series processor is aimed at reducing laptop costs and features eight cores, as opposed to the usual ten found in the X Plus variant. Users can expect around 12 hours of battery life during active web usage.
A separate keyboard must be purchased for $149.99. Additionally, a model featuring 512GB of storage will be available for $899.
The Surface Pro 12-inch boasts a 12-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2196 x 1464 (220 ppi). It maintains the traditional 3:2 aspect ratio found in Surface devices but utilizes a 90Hz refresh rate instead of the 120Hz seen in the 13-inch Surface Pro 11. Importantly, there is no OLED display option for the 12-inch model.
In addition to the display changes, Microsoft has revamped the entire chassis of the smaller Surface Pro. By eliminating vents necessary for cooling, thanks to the Snapdragon X Plus chip, the new design is rounded and feels considerably more refined than its 13-inch counterpart.
