The renowned anime director Mamoru Hosoda is back with his latest endeavor, Scarlet. This exciting project introduces us to a pink-haired warrior princess navigating a desolate wasteland. As described in the YouTube synopsis, she is Princess Scarlet, who awakens in a mysterious “Land of the Dead” and sets out to avenge her father’s death to avoid being consumed by nothingness.
The film’s poster is equally striking, showcasing the princess in a bloodied white gown, brandishing a sword with an intense expression. I’m eager to see her in action!
Hosoda’s recent works include the Academy Award-nominated Mirai, which tells the story of a young boy who uncovers a magical time-traveling garden, and Belle, a sci-fi adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which garnered praise at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. His earlier films, such as Digimon: The Movie and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, left a lasting impact on me, especially one I watched during a 12-hour international flight as a teenager that transformed my perspective. With all this in mind, I am incredibly excited for Scarlet.
Scarlet is set to hit U.S. theaters on December 12.
