This year, Lies of P is set to introduce a significant update with the arrival of the prequel DLC, Overture. In addition, players can look forward to the introduction of difficulty options, making this notoriously challenging soulslike title more accessible.
According to game director Jiwon Choi, this change aims to ensure that a broader audience can enjoy the game. Lies of P has already gained traction, selling 1 million copies within its first month and reaching an impressive 7 million players. By offering a more forgiving gameplay experience, the game hopes to attract those who may have been discouraged by its steep difficulty curve.
Choi explained that this decision was influenced by both player feedback and input from the developers at Neowiz and Round8 Studio. “By implementing these difficulty options, we can cater to different types of players, thereby expanding our audience,” he stated. The default difficulty will be called “Legendary Stalker,” while the new options will be named “Butterfly’s Guidance” and “Awakened Puppet.” Polygon has reached out to Neowiz for more details regarding these options and will provide updates as they become available.
The new difficulty settings will be a welcome enhancement for both veteran players and fans of the soulslike genre. Anyone who has struggled against foes like the Mad Clown Puppet before the Opera House can relate. While Lies of P features numerous challenging bosses, some encounters—such as the Green Monster of the Swamp and the Walker of Illusions—can be more exasperating than enjoyable. With the option to lower difficulty in future playthroughs, players can mitigate the frustration associated with these particularly tough battles.
Alongside the DLC and new difficulty options, a boss rush mode called Death March will also be added. Players will have the chance to revisit boss encounters through the new Battle Memories mode, which is a feature that every soulslike title should include.
