The latest update to Apple’s Logic Pro for both Macs and iPads introduces a game-changing feature called “Flashback Capture.” This innovation is a lifesaver for those moments when you’ve nailed a perfect take but forgot to hit record. It functions similarly to a gaming tool that allows you to retroactively save memorable moments by simply pressing a capture button for a few seconds.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because Logic Pro previously offered a similar function for MIDI recordings. Flashback Capture enhances this capability by supporting both MIDI and traditional audio inputs, enabling you to retrieve recordings using a “key command or a custom control bar button.” The feature is also effective for looped sections, saving a distinct take each time around.
Having personally experienced the frustration of trying to recreate an impressive guitar riff while listening to a track — or even just forgetting to press record — I am thrilled that this feature is available. (Fingers crossed it works as seamlessly as it appears to.)
Beyond Flashback Capture, Apple has also enhanced the audio quality produced by its Stem Splitter feature, which was introduced last year. This AI-powered tool separates instruments from recordings into individual tracks for each instrument category. The update now includes support for guitar and piano, along with the option to export specific audio segments, such as isolating instrumentals by removing vocals or eliminating drums and bass for easier remixing.
Additionally, Apple has released new sound packs, featuring over 400 dynamic loops, punchy drum kits, and a tailored Live Loops grid for both Mac and iPad versions of the app. The Mac version is also set to receive two exclusive packs: one titled Magnetic Imperfections, which captures the raw essence of analog tape, and another featuring guitar tracks recorded by Tosin Abasi, guitarist of Animals as Leaders.
