It’s time to don your tuxedo and order a martini—shaken, not stirred—because the James Bond-inspired opening of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has finally been unveiled, and it’s distinct. Konami has released a 3-minute clip on YouTube, showcasing new footage and audio from the reimagined espionage title that reinvents the cinematic introduction of Metal Gear Solid 3.
Key visual changes include a more pronounced presence of the skeletal snakes from the original sequence. The remade footage features additional scenes of Snake in action, blending seamlessly with moments from the original but presented in remarkable detail.
Where the original version focused solely on Colonel Volgin, the new adaptation brings in more pivotal characters from the Cobra Unit, such as The End (with his striking eye), The Pain, and The Fear, showcasing subtle redesigns that pay homage to the original game. For added flair, Konami includes a thrilling glimpse of the intense confrontation between Snake and The Boss.
The clip also features fresh vocals from the talented Cynthia Harrell, delivering a softer interpretation compared to her original 2004 rendition of “Snake Eater.” This new version highlights less bass and fewer brass instruments, leaning into a more psychedelic ambiance while emphasizing the lyrics, “I’m still in a dream.”
Despite the changes, the core themes of the original song—contemplations of life’s purpose and perseverance—remain intact, as composer Norihiko Hibino shared with Polygon.
You might be curious whether players can still control the on-screen snakes like back in 2004. The short answer is yes.
As noted in the YouTube description, players can interact with “elements from the original, included in the in-game version of the opening.” If Konami is keeping the snake mini-game intact, players may even hear a version of the song while scaling that improbably long ladder near the game’s climax—adding a dash of Bond-like drama.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is set to launch on August 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
