For many users of the original Amazon Fire TV devices, the long-awaited upgrade is upon us, as Netflix will cease support for these devices next month, according to the German publication Heise.
U.S. users will be impacted starting June 3rd, as reported by ZDNet, which states that affected customers have been receiving notifications from the company. Specifically, Netflix will stop supporting the 1st-generation Fire TV streaming box and Fire TV Stick, along with the 2016 Fire TV Stick featuring Alexa Voice Remote, notes ZDNet. If you’re unsure whether your Fire TV device falls into this category, you can verify it by checking the “About” section under Settings > My Fire TV.
According to Heise, Amazon is providing discounts on new Fire TV Sticks for those affected by this decision. When The Verge inquired about the availability of similar discounts for U.S. users, Amazon had not yet responded.
A recent FAQ added to a Netflix help page indicates that the company may discontinue support for devices that “can no longer receive necessary updates from their manufacturers or cannot support new features.” This update also includes references to error codes R4, R12, and R25-1.
Netflix has yet to respond to The Verge‘s request for further comments.
