On Friday, Rockstar revealed that the eagerly awaited Grand Theft Auto 6—which many believe will be the standout game of its release year—has been postponed to May 26, 2026. However! There’s also a brand-new trailer released today, and it looks incredibly promising.

The cinematic trailer kicks off with a classic GTA vibe: a chiseled man performing manual labor in a Florida-esque region, cruising around with some great ’80s tunes playing on the radio. The trailer skillfully teases a storyline where the main character picks up his partner from prison, diving back into their thrilling life of crime. It seems that the lead characters, Lucia and Jason, have their high points, but we also see Lucia in a construction vest, collapsing onto the couch with Jason after what appears to be a long day of community service post-incarceration. Regardless of their activities, the chemistry between this animated duo is striking—an impressive feat for a cinematic video game trailer.

As our deputy editor Maddy Myers remarked in a Slack message, Rockstar has always had an exceptional flair—yet the trailer for GTA 6 particularly dazzles. While the music and scenery are reminiscent of the franchise’s signature style, the trailer itself is exceptionally well-edited, effectively generating excitement among fans despite the lengthy wait until they can experience the game.

Consider the moment Jason meets Lucia. The prison guard inquires if Jason has been there before. He pauses, responds with a vague “maybe,” and the scene shifts to Lucia and Jason greeting each other. Moments later, they’re playfully tumbling in bed, followed by Lucia adjusting her hair for a ski mask as they appear to rob a bank. Then back to bed. They’re later seen enjoying Modelos on a pier and joking about the time Jason broke Lucia’s nose. Excuse me!!? It’s intense, thrilling, and perhaps even… true love?

I’d like to think this nose-breaking incident was accidental. If Rockstar chooses to portray domestic violence with its protagonist in today’s post-#MeToo landscape, well, that’s a concerning choice. The series hasn’t always been kind to its female characters. Nevertheless, Lucia appears to hold promise, and regardless of the narrative choices made in the game, this trailer undeniably showcases remarkable editing and captivating allure. There are numerous details to examine, but personally, I’ll be here searching for that stunning gold dress in real life.
