After a long wait, the eagerly anticipated cat breeding game, Mewgenics, created by Edmund McMillen of Binding of Isaac fame, is finally nearing its release. As anticipation builds, the game has revealed its first official trailer, which is quite impressive.
Originally introduced in 2012 as Mew-Genics, the game was described as a feline-themed blend of “The Sims and Pokémon”, with influences from Animal Crossing and Tamagotchi. It was intended as the long-awaited follow-up to Super Meat Boy by developer Team Meat. However, the project was quietly shelved a few years later.
In the intervening years, significant changes have occurred. McMillen and his Team Meat partner, Tommy Refenes, parted ways. McMillen then went on to achieve success with The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, as well as other acclaimed titles like The End is Nigh and The Legend of Bum-bo. In 2018, McMillen announced he had revived Mewgenics, and development has been progressing steadily since then.
Since its revival, there have been regular updates. Mewgenics has evolved significantly over the years and is now a cat-themed tactical RPG, focusing on breeding and combat. It is expected to launch this year. Although there is no specific release date yet, a captivating live-action trailer has been released. The trailer features the touching story of a struggling couple brought closer by feline creatures, and includes some gameplay elements, all set to a catchy tune.
In a post on Steam unveiling the trailer, McMillen provided a brief update on the game’s progress, noting it is currently in the polishing stage before a more detailed showcase next month. As for the release date news, more information is expected to be disclosed in the coming month. For now, players can wishlist the game on PC.
