Lucasfilm is currently working on a new animated series centered on the resilient Star Wars antagonist, Darth Maul. Despite facing defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi on two separate occasions, Darth Maul is set to take center stage in the newly announced series titled Maul: Shadow Lord.
This exciting development was unveiled on Friday during the Lucasfilm Animation’s 20th Anniversary panel at the Star Wars Celebration 2025. Director Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm’s vice president of animation, Athena Portillo, delighted fans with a trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord. According to Variety, the series is set "about a year" after the finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where Maul’s attempt to sway Ahsoka, who was then a rogue Jedi, to the Dark Side was unsuccessful. Shadow Lord will showcase Maul taking on his own apprentice, a classic theme in Sith lore.
Sam Witwer, who provided the voice for Maul in Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, is returning to reprise his role and is even involved in reviewing the scripts for the series, as noted by Portillo. Maul: Shadow Lord is anticipated to debut on Disney Plus in 2026.
