Nintendo has announced a new feature for Switch 2 owners that allows them to enable a setting preventing their system’s battery from charging beyond approximately 90%. This initiative is aimed at extending battery life, as revealed by Nintendo in their Nintendo Today app on Monday.
According to Nintendo, when this option is activated, “The Nintendo Switch 2 system stops charging when it reaches about 90% remaining battery.” They explained that halting the charge at this level minimizes battery deterioration. Furthermore, with the “Stop Charging Around 90%” setting enabled, the charging speed will slow as the battery approaches that threshold.
Users can easily activate this feature through the main Switch 2 interface by navigating to System Settings > System > Stop Charging Around 90%.
Similar battery management options are already found in smartphones, tablets, and laptops, which allow users to set a maximum charge limit, typically between 80-85%, to help extend battery longevity. Additionally, Valve is currently testing a comparable feature for the Steam Deck in a beta client update. In their patch notes, Valve noted that “limiting the charge limit to 80% can be beneficial for long-term battery health,” especially for devices that remain docked or rarely experience a complete battery depletion.
Switch 2 users who frequently play while docked and connected to a TV or regularly use the system without fully discharging the battery will likely benefit from this option, similar to the situation Valve outlined.
