Nintendo has recently opened pre-orders for Switch 2 games on its online store, coinciding with the launch of pre-orders for the Switch 2 console. Out of habit, I checked the “Game file size” section for each title, revealing that many Switch 2 game file sizes are surprisingly large, resembling those of their Windows PC counterparts rather than the original Switch ports.
This is understandable, considering that Nintendo’s latest console is capable of running titles at 1080p and beyond with impressive frame rates. However, it’s worth noting that just a few games could fill the Switch 2’s built-in 256 GB storage capacity. Below are some file sizes for upcoming Switch 2 ports:
The cumulative size of these games exceeds 300 GB — so you’ll likely need a microSD Express card.
While it may seem excessive to purchase additional storage for a console you haven’t yet received, it’s wise to invest in the largest microSD Express card you can afford for the Switch 2. These cards offer significantly faster speeds (and higher costs) compared to the microSD cards used with the Switch and other devices like the Steam Deck. Please note that your existing microSD cards will not work with the Switch 2, except for viewing screenshots and video clips saved from the original Switch.
