In recent months, I’ve become deeply immersed in Commander. Although the credit card bills have yet to arrive, building decks for Magic: The Gathering‘s most popular format has become a key aspect of my post-work leisure time. I’ve started attending game nights at the local shop, which has been a great way to learn about the game’s modern dynamics and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. Additionally, organizing cards provides a welcome distraction from the news cycle. Through this, I recently discovered an impressive new deck from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm set, which I believe could be one of the year’s most thrilling Magic releases.
Magic: the Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander Deck – Temur Roar is a 100-card deck centered around one of Magic‘s consistently popular strategies: launching massive dragons at your opponents. The strategy is relatively straightforward, involving ramping up mana turn by turn to summon your dragon allies en masse.
The deck is led by Ureni of the Unwritten, a seven-mana spirit dragon. Typically, summoning Ureni would take until the seventh round of play, but the deck includes cards that can accelerate mana generation to bring him out earlier. Once in play, Ureni can reveal additional dragon cards and place them on the battlefield for free. This often results in two or three powerful creatures with flying and/or trample appearing by turn five, setting the stage to start eliminating your opponents.
And that’s just the base deck! According to The Command Zone, the deck significantly increases in strength with a few enhancements. For under $100, including upgrades, you can assemble a formidable deck. Given its foundation in the cherished Tarkir setting—a realm we haven’t revisited in over a decade—it stands as one of the most thematic Commander decks in recent memory.
Naturally, Commander decks can be fleeting. The five decks from Tarkir: Dragonstorm were just released last week, and anecdotal evidence suggests they’re selling swiftly. If you have an interest in playing with dragons or plan to in the future, now’s the time to acquire one. Moreover, it offers excellent value; as Tolarian Community College notes, the cards in this $44.99 box would cost about $175 on the secondary market as of last week. So even if you’re not planning to develop this particular deck immediately, it might be worth purchasing for future use.
