Unleashing Chaos: Wētā FX's Epic Minecraft Chicken Jockey Adventure

Sheldon Stopsack, the VFX supervisor, and Kevin Estey, the animation supervisor, shared insights into their experience working with Wētā on the initial phases of character design, including the chicken jockey. Although Wētā handled only the early stages, they participated in the motion-capture sessions where Hess collaborated with actors to body-double for the digital characters. Both Stopsack and Estey found these sessions particularly enjoyable to observe.

Estey expressed the privilege of being part of a small group that witnessed the creation of motion capture on their mocap stage. He recounted how actor Jared worked closely with stunt performers and actors to coordinate the digital sequences, just weeks after filming the live-action components with Black and Momoa. The process was filled with laughter and creativity.

For the baby zombie’s scenes, its movements were choreographed by a smaller-statured stunt performer using a wheeled, seesaw-like prop. Estey noted the precautions taken to ensure safety during the more dynamic performances, like jumping and head-butting. He also mentioned a delightful behind-the-scenes moment that didn’t make it to the final cut, where Jared envisioned the baby zombie performing an energetic dance routine on ropes.

Stopsack elaborated on how improvisation and exploration were key themes during the motion capture sessions. This playful approach resulted in many spontaneous and fun moments, with crew members enjoying and contributing to the creative process. Though only selected clips appeared in the final film, these sessions encapsulated the movie’s essence by focusing on entertainment and innovative ideas.

Estey highlighted the opportunity these sessions provided to understand Jared’s directorial style, his creative approach, and his sense of humor, which helped establish a collaborative tone for the team.

Somewhere, there is behind-the-scenes footage capturing the playful antics of the chicken jockey actor on a toy horse and performing on ropes. With any luck, this footage might become available with the digital release of A Minecraft Movie.
