Unveiling the Threads: Exploring the...

For followers of YouTube’s phenomenal RackaRacka channel, the rise of Australian twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou was to be expected. Having collaborated on videos since childhood, they garnered millions of subscribers online, making a transition into filmmaking a natural evolution.

However, what shocked audiences was the dark and intense atmosphere of their directorial debut, 2023’s Talk to Me. Given their reputation for comedy, parody, and action, this plunge into horror was bold, yet the film emerged as a strikingly sure-footed horror tale. It became a significant critical success and A24’s highest-grossing horror film, ensuring the Philippous would soon grace the big screen again. Fans of horror are now eagerly anticipating their second film, Bring Her Back, which is yet another triumph—an equally somber horror narrative about youth and demonic possession, albeit approached in entirely different manners, complete with intense action that might even make seasoned horror fans squirm.

The Philippous penned Bring Her Back and Talk to Me concurrently, transitioning back and forth during the writing phase. This process led to the creation of two films that, though not overtly linked, reside in the same universe—according to the creators.

“That’s just a natural outcome of writing multiple projects simultaneously,” Danny Philippou explained in a video interview with Polygon. “The connection isn’t visually evident in the films. I understand how they interlink and coexist within the same universe, but there are no substantial clues presented onscreen.”

Bring Her Back revolves around distinct protagonists—primarily, 17-year-old Andy (Billy Barratt), who has recently become an orphan, and his younger stepsister Piper (Sora Wong), who has severely limited vision. Andy is accustomed to guiding and protecting her, often bending the truth about unpleasant realities he encounters. Conversely, Piper relies on Andy while simultaneously feeling constrained by his overprotectiveness.

Their new guardian is former social worker Laura (Sally Hawkins), who displays an evident favoritism towards Piper, treating Andy with indifference and contempt. Adding to the unsettling dynamic is Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), a mute boy with deeply troubling behavior, pushing Bring Her Back into a tense horror narrative far beyond mere domestic strife.
