UPS is contemplating an innovative technological advancement: humanoid robots. The logistics leader is reportedly engaged in discussions with Figure AI, a robotics startup supported by Microsoft, to incorporate these robots into their workflow, as per informed sources.
This initiative marks a significant shift in UPS’s automation approach, moving beyond traditional robotic arms to more sophisticated, mobile AI-driven systems.
“We consistently evaluate and implement various technologies, including robotics,” UPS stated in a press release, refraining from mentioning Figure.
Current Developments
The humanoid robot from Figure, which gained attention from a viral video in February, was demonstrated sorting packages alongside a conveyor belt, indicating its capacity for practical warehouse functions. Standing at 5’6″, it is designed for human-oriented environments.

While the precise details of UPS’s potential implementation are not yet public, the ongoing discussions indicate increasing momentum.
UPS has been significantly increasing its investment in technology, dedicating approximately $1 billion each year to automation and AI to reduce costs and enhance efficiency.
Recent Initiatives Include:
- AI-driven ORION routing system, which saves 10 million miles annually
- EDGE and Network Planning Tools that have saved hundreds of millions
- Collaborations with Dexterity Inc. for “human-like” robotic arms
The Rationale
UPS and the wider logistics sector are facing persistent labor shortages, with around 76% of logistics companies reporting staffing deficits. Humanoid robots provide a scalable solution, capable of performing tasks that traditional systems struggle with.
Looking Forward
Experts predict that humanoid robots may become commonplace in logistics in the next 5 to 10 years. UPS’s proactive approach could provide it with a significant competitive advantage, especially as Figure seeks $1.5 billion in funding at a valuation of $39.5 billion.
If UPS fully embraces humanoid robots, it could fundamentally transform warehouse operations and establish a new standard for the future of global logistics.
