US Prices Set to Rise Next Week for Temu and Shein Shoppers

Shein and Temu are set to increase their prices in the US. In notices to their customers, these ultra-affordable retailers announced that they will begin adjusting prices starting April 25th due to changes in “global trade rules and tariffs.”

President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese imports, with rates climbing up to 145 percent. This week, the administration indicated that tariffs on certain items, such as electric vehicles, could reach as high as 245 percent when combined with existing levies.

The US is also eliminating the de minimis exemption, which allowed items valued under $800 to be imported tariff-free—a policy Shein and Temu have depended on for years. Starting May 2nd, these companies, known for selling inexpensive clothing, toys, electronics, and home products, will no longer benefit from this exemption.

Shein and Temu are advising customers on their websites, “Until April 25, prices will remain unchanged, so you can shop now at today’s rates. We’re making every effort to keep prices low and reduce the impact on you.”

This week, Sensor Tower, an app analysis firm, reported that both Shein and Temu have decreased their digital advertising spending on US social media platforms. Temu’s ad expenditure fell by an average of 31 percent from March 31st to April 13th compared to the prior 30 days, while Shein’s spending declined by an average of 19 percent during the same period.
