Certain notification features on X, previously known as Twitter, experienced outages starting Thursday afternoon, which prevented users from receiving alerts for new posts from accounts they follow. Numerous users have shared their experiences on platforms like Reddit, Downdetector, and X itself, and my colleagues at The Verge have noted a lack of new notifications, even with alerts activated for accounts that have made multiple posts since yesterday.
While there has been no official comment from X, our observations and social media reports indicate that notifications began to function again around 11 AM ET.
In addition to affecting updates from celebrities, influencers, and sports commentators, the malfunctioning notifications could disrupt crucial alerts related to local weather, public transportation, or government services.
While some notifications for user tags have resumed, users have reported missing notifications for new likes and followers for nearly a day. In some cases, notifications appeared several hours later than they should have.
The cause of the issue remains unknown. At 6:04 AM ET on Friday, X owner Elon Musk tweeted that users “should be noticing some improvements to the quality of recommendations in your timeline.”
Update, May 9th: It appears the problem has been resolved.
